Find how the top picture changes, then apply the same change.

Correct. Let’s look at the rule. What stays the same: the yellow background and the same two shapes. What changes: the whole picture rotates 180 degrees, so the shapes switch places and turn upside down.
What is GATE?

Gifted and Talented Education, an official designation your child can earn.

GATE is the name California and many districts give their gifted program, administered by the state’s Department of Education. Programs are run and funded locally, so each district sets its own criteria. Other states call it GT, TAG or Highly Capable.

How children are identifiedHow students qualify

One test.

Many districts use one test, not only grades or teacher recommendations.

When it happens

Often 2nd or 3rd grade.

Screening windows commonly run from 2nd through 6th grade, depending on your district’s policy.

District windows can run from 2nd through 6th grade.

Which test

Often the NNAT®.

One of the most widely used. GateBuddy covers Levels C and D, the levels used in grades 2–4.

What it opens

A seat in the gifted program.

And often an earlier path to advanced learning, including honors and AP coursework later on.

Defined in law

Gifted and talented education is recognized in federal law and carried out through state and local programs, not just as a label a school hands out.

FederalFederal law defines gifted students as those with high achievement capability who may need services schools don’t ordinarily provide. ESSA, 20 U.S.C. § 7801(27)

Read next What parents miss about early GATE testing.

What parents often discover too late about screening timing, the NNAT® format, and why familiarity matters so much for bright students.

This test can matter, a lot.

Strong students score below the cutoff every year.

Not because they aren’t capable. Because the test looks nothing like their schoolwork, and the first time they see it is the day it counts.

What goes wrong

The format is unfamiliar.

NNAT® visual reasoning isn’t taught in class. No words, no numbers — abstract rules a child has to figure out alone, against a clock.

What goes wrong

Preparation falls short.

For many families test day is the first look. For others, scattered practice that never builds the reasoning or the timing.

What it costs

A second chance is harder.

Re-testing can mean a special request, a wait of a year or more, or a harder test at a higher level.

The good news

Every one of these is fixable — with practice, before test day.

1The format stops being a surprise. Your child has seen these question types before.

2Practice gets smarter. Each session focuses on the skills that need the most practice.

Built for the screen

A complete test experience, not printed practice sheets.

It’s 2026. Most districts give the NNAT® on a screen. GateBuddy prepares your child in that format: on-screen questions, a timed work period, and a clear view of progress instead of on paper.

Typical test prep

Paper packets for a test taken on a screen

You grade every packet by hand, page by page

No way to see how far along your child is

Answer keys, not explanations

Correct answer: C

Adaptive practice

A practice plan that adapts.

A wrong answer tells you more than a score does. GateBuddy reads the question type, the reasoning rule, and the difficulty behind it, then builds the next session around exactly that.
